Bad Drivers? Red States!

September 28, 2010

What was more surprising: how the breakdown between states with more dangerous drivers and safer drivers fell almost completely along the lines of the 2008 McCain-Obama election, with the Republicans again coming up on the short end. Nine of the 10 worst-performing states went for McCain, while nine of the 10 best performers voted for Obama. (Delaware and Mississippi were the respective outliers.)

Hardly a surprize about OK being one of the worst. You see it all the time. Thugs zigging and zagging through traffic, speeding through parking lots, parking in handicapped spots, cussing and swearing at anybody in thier way, meanwhile chatting on thier cell. Me me me.

  1. The reason OK is a bad driving state.. is because of the weather!!! Plus, the people are too polite. Has nothing to do with their political affiliation. Just my opinion. I never have driven in on roads like this in my life. People are NUTS.. they can’t even cuss here.. or flip people off without getting pissed off. They take everything to heart. When you try to help them.. they go ballistic.

I have never been in accident EVER.. but have avoided MANY… oh yeah. I also have a tendency to drive very FAST.. that is another problem. People drive too slow on express lane.. and they love to ride your ass.

It’s nice to be near the top of a national list in something, instead of always near the bottom.

  3. Whenever I’m driving in Tulsa and I feel like I pushed a yellow light, two and sometimes three cars follow me through. Stopping for a yellow light in Tulsa as required by law is a good way to get rear-ended.

  4. The weather? Good grief. Well maybe because Okies are clueless about snow and ice? Roads not that bad here compared with Ohio in the spring.

Actually parts of NE Ohio are worse – much worse – for lights. Yellow meant go faster, red meant go faster and beep. Hurry up on a green and you would get nailed.

  5. Until recently, I was a full-time pedestrian and paid very careful attention to what cars were doing around crosswalks here in suburban Philly.

One of the things I look at, when I can do it without risking harm to myself, is any bumper sticker I see on a car that runs a stoplight or stop sign. I’ve noticed over the years that among cars with stickers that identify (at least suggest) political affiliations (campaign stickers, etc), Republican cars are much much much more likely to blow stops than others. They’re also much more likely to come to a stop in crosswalks, thus blocking them (I’ve seen dozens of people in wheelchairs unable to get by Republican cars, but only once or twice have I seen a liberal car do the same).

As somebody who studies research methods as one of my academic specialities, I apologize to the Research Gods for making such uninformed leaps, but I really have noticed this steadily over the years.

    • Seth – there’s nothing wrong with observing anecdotal evidence, even for a professional researcher. Isn’t this how we form hypotheses to test?

  6. What’s this.. NO story out on Rahm??

  7. That was my post up there BTW..

Question is.. Who will run against Rahm???

Peter Rouse will be next Chief of staff just watch..

  8. You post something anonymous one. Not that interested in Chicago politics.

    • I guess I’m not too interested in Chicago politics either. But I have to say that Richie Daley seems to have done a great job. I was pessimistic about him, because his father was evil.

Let’s not be too much amazed that Swannie predicted Rouse as the next chief of staff at 4:45 PM. It was announced a good bit earlier than that.

  9. looks like all are abandoning ship..

  10. Is BBQ swan good?

  11. I don’t know doggie.. never tried that one.. I hate duck..too greasy.. I got the punt today.. on usatoday. too funny.. Mrs. Trog. LOL. Yes, it was worth it.
