Don’t Feed Teabaggers?

January 24, 2010

•South Carolina Lt. Gov Andre Bauer believes government assistance is like “feeding stray animals.”

“My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed. You’re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don’t think too much further than that. And so what you’ve got to do is you’ve got to curtail that type of behavior. They don’t know any better,” Bauer said.

And he keeps digging:

Bauer is writing off criticism of his comments as “political correctness,” but this has nothing to do with political correctness. It has everything to do with basic human decency. And when you say that we should let poor people go hungry because otherwise they will “breed,” you are failing that test of basic human decency.

Bauer is a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor in South Carolina. Given the GOP’s lurch to the right, I’d be stunned if this didn’t help him in the primary. But in a state where more than half the children in schools receive some form of school lunch assistance, it gives Democrats a potent issue should be make it to the general.
